How monster storms shape fringing reefs: Observations from the 2020 Middle East Cyclone

چکیده
In March 2020, an unusually intense storm system struck the Gulf of Aqaba-Eilat, resulting in severe shoreline damage. This brief account examines post-storm observations inconsistent damage patterns and structural changes along a specific coastal stretch located at south beach Eilat. Certain sections coastline experienced direct impact from extreme waves on south-southeast-facing shallow reef, areas where rocks were completely stripped corals due to sediment backwash. Conversely, characterized by ridges deep troughs saw loss branching some massive colonies, while many small survived. A neighboring area with well-developed fringing reef suffered lesser Between severely affected robust lies unconsolidated slope that migrated eastward least 2 m following storm, incorporating numerous coral colonies dislodged event. We propose this advances each major occurrence, influencing characteristics nearby shores reefs. case demonstrates how events, conjunction geomorphology, have cumulative significant not only structure communities but also fundamental shape reefs themselves. As climate change amplifies range, intensity, frequency storms, comprehending these processes becomes increasingly crucial.

Identification of possible intense historical geomagnetic storms using combined sunspot and auroral observations from East Asia
Comprehensive catalogues of ancient sunspot and auroral observations from East Asia are used to identify possible intense historical geomagnetic storms in the interval 210 BC–AD 1918. There are about 270 entries in the sunspot catalogue and about 1150 entries in the auroral catalogue. Special databases have been constructed in which the scientific information in these two catalogues is placed i...
متن کاملHow different source regions across the Middle East change aerosol and dust particle characteristics
A major question is whether different source regions across the Middle East account for changes in aerosol and dust particle characteristics, which impact Western Iran. Therefore, over a period of sampling from April 2017 to April 2018, dust particles were collected in Western Iran from different cities including Urmia, Sanandaj, Sare-Pole-Zahab, Dehloran and Abadan. The research aim is to comp...
متن کاملShelters and Their Use by Fishes on Fringing Coral Reefs
Coral reef fish density and species richness are often higher at sites with more structural complexity. This association may be due to greater availability of shelters, but surprisingly little is known about the size and density of shelters and their use by coral reef fishes. We quantified shelter availability and use by fishes for the first time on a Caribbean coral reef by counting all holes ...
متن کاملThe Middle East Respiratory Syndrome—How Worried Should We Be?
Ten years after the severe acute respiratory syndrome epidemic, a second coronavirus, the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), has been identified as the cause of a highly lethal pneumonia in patients in the Middle East and in travelers from this region. Over the past 9 months, since the virus was first isolated, much has been learned about the biology of the virus. It is no...
متن کاملHow Big Should the Monster Model Be?
The 1970’s witnessed two attempts to organize large areas of mathematics by introducing a structure in which all of that mathematics took place. Both of these programs explicitly invoke large cardinal hypotheses; advocates of both programs deny that these hypotheses are necessary. There were a few years ago no extant metatheorems justifying these conclusions (but see McLarty [23]). By a metathe...
